Description

Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers provides continuous disk-based and traditional tape-based data protection. It can protect a single server, multiple servers, a storage area network, or a large enterprise.

At the core of the Backup Exec system is the Backup Exec Media Server. The media server controls the backup media (disk, network attached storage, or tape) and can back up data from servers running any of the following:

  • Windows 2000 Server family
  • Windows Server 2003 family
  • Windows Small Business Server 2000
  • Windows Small Business Server 2003
  • Windows Small Business Server 2005
  • Windows Storage Server 2003
  • Windows Storage Server 2005
  • Windows XP with SP2
  • Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

The media server's administration console provides an intuitive interface and wizards to simplify installation, setup, backup, recovery, media management, disaster preparation, cluster installation, and agent configuration.

A Web-based search engine enables end users to retrieve previous versions of files stored on the file server from the Internet without contacting IT.

In addition to the donation available through TechSoup Stock, Symantec offers agents and options that enhance the core Backup Exec for Windows Servers products by improving backup data integrity, reducing backup windows, and extending protection to UNIX, Linux, and other servers, as well as to desktops and laptops. These agents and options, including several that are new in this version, are available through the Symantec Web site or through authorized resellers.

Free support is available through the Backup Exec standard online support program, using Symantec online knowledge bases.

Features

  • Because continuous data protection backs up data residing on file servers as it changes, open files are protected, and incremental or differential backups are not needed.
  • With block-level protection, only the changed data is captured and protected.
  • Policies provide a simple, logical method for managing backup jobs and strategies. Policies contain job templates, which have job attributes that define how and when Backup Exec processes a job.
  • Automated alerts can be sent via Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, SMTP email, pager, printer, net send broadcast, or network monitoring applications.
  • Configurable 128-bit and 256-bit encryption is available when data is being backed up or stored on tape.
