Description

System Center Operations Manager 2007 is a server application for monitoring of IT services across an organization, providing administrators with a comprehensive view of the health of the organization's IT environment. Operations Manager can provide IT departments with reports at defined intervals as well as alerts when immediate attention is necessary. The successor to Operations Management Server 2005, Operations Manager 2007 offers many new features and rebuilt components, designed for greater scalability and customizability.

Operations Manager allows administrators to define monitored services and applications according to the pre-existing network setup. In a large organization, for example, email might be handled not by a single installation of Exchange Server, but by many servers and network devices. Operations Manager would allow the administrator to graphically define the components that comprise the service, thus providing for a single, unified report of email server performance.

Operations Manager can be used to monitor performance of both server and client applications. Management packs — the sets of instructions that Operations Manager uses to monitor specific applications — are available for most current Microsoft server applications and operating systems, as well as many from third parties.

When application or operating system crashes take place, Operations Manager reports pertinent information to administrators. Dr. Watson and Windows Error Reporting can send details directly to Operations Manager, which analyzes the crash data and incorporates it into its routine reporting.

R2 improves performance and usability. It also integrates monitoring of non-Microsoft systems, such as Unix and Linux, and extends monitoring at the service level to include performance objectives for individual services.

This product includes SQL Server 2005 Technology. SQL Server Technology acquired with this product can be used only to support Operations Manager 2007.

License Requirements: This product includes only the Operations Manager server license. A client management license (ML) is required for each nonserver device managed by Operations Manager. Clients may be licensed per operating system environment (OSE) or per user.

A standard or enterprise server ML is required for each server (that is, each device running a server operating system) managed by Operations Manager. The standard ML allows for management of basic server operating system workloads, while the enterprise ML is necessary for management of server applications and other premium workloads.

All server MLs are licensed per OSE. In other words, if a device is running multiple OSEs, one ML is necessary for each OSE managed by Operations Manager. Client MLs are licensed per OSE or per user. For more information about licensing Operations Manager, see System Center Licensing (PDF) from Microsoft.

Acquiring the Installation Media:

During check-out, you will be required to request installation media, which will be shipped to you free of charge. To activate this product, you might need a volume license key or setup code. See question 5.2 of the Microsoft Software Donation Programs FAQ.

Features

  • Under the Software Assurance program, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage.
  • The server can periodically perform synthetic transactions in order to test operations from the end-user perspective. Management packs available from Microsoft partners cover many non-Microsoft technologies, allowing a comprehensive view of performance across multiple operating systems. Microsoft maintains an online catalog of available management packs. The Management Pack Authoring Console lets administrators create management packs for custom applications and other technology components. All communications with the server are encrypted, ensuring a secure reporting environment. Administrators can define custom security roles for all users, allowing each user access to appropriate information.

System Requirements

Restrictions

  • Occasionally, TechSoup Stock updates the organization types used for organization registration to better reflect and support the giving priorities of our product donors and the major activities of various charitable and nonprofit organizations. See how the changes might affect your organization.
  • Donated product will be distributed under this program to qualifying organizations and libraries only, not to individuals.
  • Nonprofits and public libraries are eligible to participate in the Microsoft Software Donation Programs.
  • Nonprofit organizations:

To qualify, an organization must be a nonprofit with valid 501(c)(3) status.

  • Public libraries:

Public libraries must either have valid 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or be listed in the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) database.

  • Public libraries:

Qualified public libraries may request Microsoft software donations through this program for public access computers only (donated software may not be used for back-office or other administration purposes, unless the public computers are on a shared network which also hosts the personal computers of library staff). Participating libraries must also make their collection and basic services available to the population of their legal service area without charges to individual users (excluding incidental fees such as printing charges). If they so choose, libraries may impose charges on users outside the legal service area, and may provide products and services (beyond basic services), to the public at large, with or without individual charges.

  • Microsoft products are not available for distribution to educational institutions (including K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and trade schools), political organizations, religious organizations (except for those with a secular community designation), healthcare networks and healthcare research organizations, private foundations, or non-public libraries. Please consult our list of ineligible organizations for more information.
  • Each qualified nonprofit or public library may request up to six titles, and up to 50 licenses per title per two-year period.
  • Exceptions:

    • For server titles, one server license per title and up to 50 Client Access Licenses (CALs) may be requested (i.e. customers may not order two copies of the same server title).
    • Server licenses with accompanying CALS will — together — count as two separate titles towards the six-title limit.
    • Customers may order additional licenses of software titles that they already received through TechSoup Stock (as part of their previous order within the two-year ordering cycle). This is true even if the current title is an upgraded version of the original software. Such orders will not count against the 6-title limit. However, the total number of licenses requested for this title (between the two orders) may not exceed 50.
  • Each nonprofit or public library will be eligible to make one donation request for Microsoft products and licenses each year through TechSoup Stock (i.e. an organization that ordered 10/1/04 may place a new order 10/1/05). Though charities and nonprofits may order twice (once per year) within a two-year period, the combined total of products ordered in a two-year period may not exceed six titles and 50 user licenses per title (or one server license per server title). Once two years have passed since an organization's original order, these limits will be reset (e.g. a customer that placed an order on 10/1/04 may order six new titles and 50 licenses per title (or one license per server title) on 10/1/06).
  • Special Extra Donation:

    • In conjunction with the release of the Windows 7 operating system on October 22, 2009, nonprofits and public libraries might be able to place an extra donation request for Windows 7 or Windows Vista. This request can be placed only from October 22, 2009, through January 31, 2010. Read the details.
  • Donations will be fulfilled using Microsoft Open Licensing. This means that boxed (full packaged) products and paper licenses will not be shipped to organizations and libraries through this program. Instead, an e-mail will arrive with an authorization number for approved requests and directions to go to a Microsoft Web page to download licensing agreements. Software media (CDs) will be sent directly from Microsoft via air mail.
  • Each order must include a minimum of five "seats." For most products, each license counts as a single seat. However, products that support multiple devices or users count as five seats, and thus fulfill the five-seat requirement on their own. More information about the five-seat minimum is available in the Microsoft Program FAQ.
  • Exception — Special Extra Donation:

    • Requests for the special extra donation of Windows 7 or Windows Vista placed from October 22, 2009, through January 31, 2010, need not include five seats.
  • The donation granted through TechSoup Stock will enable nonprofits to fill additional needs for Microsoft products or licenses at specially discounted rates through Microsoft's Charity Reseller Channel, without being subject to normal charity order minimums. Public libraries without 501(c)(3) status are not eligible for this program benefit.
  • Microsoft may, at its sole discretion, provide "functionally equivalent" substitute product(s) for any request or order.
  • Organizations that advocate, support, or practice discrimination based on age, ethnicity, gender, national origin, disability, race, size, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background are not eligible to participate in this program. Organizations must be willing and able to attest that they do not discriminate on any of these grounds in order to receive donations.
  • Microsoft products may not be transferred or resold. Additionally, Microsoft products may not be installed on computers that will be given to or sold to other organizations or individuals.
