Description
Small Business Server 2003 R2 Premium Edition includes the technologies of SBS 2003 Standard Edition as well as improved database and firewall technologies and tools for developing Web pages and Web server applications. It provides small organizations with many of the features used by large organizations — file and printer sharing, an email server, tools to manage Internet access, internal Web sites (intranets), remote access, support for mobile devices, backup/restore tools, and online transaction processing (OLTP) and business intelligence (BI) applications — in an integrated product that supports up to 75 users.
Included Technologies: Small Business Server 2003 Premium combines these Windows server technologies:
- The core Windows Server technologies, including network tools and network security; file, print, and application sharing; and firewall protection (but not including technologies appropriate only to medium-to-large enterprises)
- SharePoint Services for an internal Web site
- Exchange Server 2003 and Outlook for email, messaging, personal information management, and shared calendaring
- Server Update Services for automated network-wide patch and update management
- Shared Fax Service
- SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition for integrated data management and reporting
- Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004 for firewall security and tools to manage and monitor internal Internet access
Licenses Included: This product includes two types of licenses:
- A server license
- Five client access licenses (CALs) that can be used for either users or devices
A new feature of the R2 release is that these CALs can be used to access additional servers running Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003, and SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition on the SBS 2003 R2 network.
CALs used with Small Business Server 2003 need a volume license key (VLK) for activation. The VLK is available through the Activation Hotline. For the United States, the phone number of the Activation Hotline is (888) 352-7140.
Additional Information: For additional information about the available editions of Small Business Server 2003 and 2008 and the server and client licensing requirements, see the Guide to Small Business Server Editions and Licensing.
Acquiring the Installation Media:
During check-out, you will be required to request installation media, which will be shipped to you free of charge. To activate this product, you might need a volume license key or setup code. See question 5.2 of the Microsoft Software Donation Programs FAQ.
Features
- Under the Software Assurance program, customers acquire the right to install any new release of products covered in the agreement during the term of their coverage.
- Resources (such as Internet access and software) and equipment (printers, and fax machines) can be shared across the organization, and users can fax directly from their workstations. Workstations with Internet connections can securely access email, internal Web sites, network files, and business applications; Windows Mobile–based or Smartphone devices can securely access email, schedules, and contacts.
- Tools are included for creating a customized Web site and email domain that resides on the organization's own server.
- The organization is protected from unauthorized users and data loss with:
- Built-in firewall protection and security-enhanced remote access
- Tools to manage and monitor Internet access, block spammers, and automatically remove dangerous email attachments to help prevent virus attacks
- Automatic data backup and the ability to retrieve and restore previous versions
- Automated patch and update management tools keep workstations and servers up to date, and a daily email report helps identify issues before they occur. A green check indicates that the system is healthy, or the report details actions necessary for attaining green-check status.

- Technical restrictions:
- The maximum number of users per device is 75.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:
- Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory forest.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.
- A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.
- Each additional server must have a Windows Small Business Server 2003 client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.
- It is not possible to run Terminal Services in Application Server mode on Windows Small Business Server 2003.
- It is not recommended to host an external Web site from Small Business Server 2003; the version of SQL Server included cannot be used as the back end for a Web site.
Restrictions
- Occasionally, TechSoup Stock updates the organization types used for organization registration to better reflect and support the giving priorities of our product donors and the major activities of various charitable and nonprofit organizations. See how the changes might affect your organization.
- Donated product will be distributed under this program to qualifying organizations and libraries only, not to individuals.
- Nonprofits and public libraries are eligible to participate in the Microsoft Software Donation Programs.
-
Nonprofit organizations:
To qualify, an organization must be a nonprofit with valid 501(c)(3) status.
-
Public libraries:
Public libraries must either have valid 501(c)(3) nonprofit status or be listed in the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) database.
-
Public libraries:
Qualified public libraries may request Microsoft software donations through this program for public access computers only (donated software may not be used for back-office or other administration purposes, unless the public computers are on a shared network which also hosts the personal computers of library staff). Participating libraries must also make their collection and basic services available to the population of their legal service area without charges to individual users (excluding incidental fees such as printing charges). If they so choose, libraries may impose charges on users outside the legal service area, and may provide products and services (beyond basic services), to the public at large, with or without individual charges.
- Microsoft products are not available for distribution to educational institutions (including K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and trade schools), political organizations, religious organizations (except for those with a secular community designation), healthcare networks and healthcare research organizations, private foundations, or non-public libraries. Please consult our list of ineligible organizations for more information.
- Each qualified nonprofit or public library may request up to six titles, and up to 50 licenses per title per two-year period.
- For server titles, one server license per title and up to 50 Client Access Licenses (CALs) may be requested (i.e. customers may not order two copies of the same server title).
- Server licenses with accompanying CALS will — together — count as two separate titles towards the six-title limit.
- Customers may order additional licenses of software titles that they already received through TechSoup Stock (as part of their previous order within the two-year ordering cycle). This is true even if the current title is an upgraded version of the original software. Such orders will not count against the 6-title limit. However, the total number of licenses requested for this title (between the two orders) may not exceed 50.
- Each nonprofit or public library will be eligible to make one donation request for Microsoft products and licenses each year through TechSoup Stock (i.e. an organization that ordered 10/1/04 may place a new order 10/1/05). Though charities and nonprofits may order twice (once per year) within a two-year period, the combined total of products ordered in a two-year period may not exceed six titles and 50 user licenses per title (or one server license per server title). Once two years have passed since an organization's original order, these limits will be reset (e.g. a customer that placed an order on 10/1/04 may order six new titles and 50 licenses per title (or one license per server title) on 10/1/06).
- In conjunction with the release of the Windows 7 operating system on October 22, 2009, nonprofits and public libraries might be able to place an extra donation request for Windows 7 or Windows Vista. This request can be placed only from October 22, 2009, through June 30, 2010. Read the details.
- Donations will be fulfilled using Microsoft Open Licensing. This means that boxed (full packaged) products and paper licenses will not be shipped to organizations and libraries through this program. Instead, an e-mail will arrive with an authorization number for approved requests and directions to go to a Microsoft Web page to download licensing agreements. Software media (CDs) will be sent directly from Microsoft via air mail.
- Each order must include a minimum of five "seats." For most products, each license counts as a single seat. However, products that support multiple devices or users count as five seats, and thus fulfill the five-seat requirement on their own. More information about the five-seat minimum is available in the Microsoft Program FAQ.
- Requests for the special extra donation of Windows 7 or Windows Vista placed from October 22, 2009, through June 30, 2010, need not include five seats.
- The donation granted through TechSoup Stock will enable nonprofits to fill additional needs for Microsoft products or licenses at specially discounted rates through Microsoft's Charity Reseller Channel, without being subject to normal charity order minimums. Public libraries without 501(c)(3) status are not eligible for this program benefit.
- Microsoft may, at its sole discretion, provide "functionally equivalent" substitute product(s) for any request or order.
- Organizations that advocate, support, or practice discrimination based on age, ethnicity, gender, national origin, disability, race, size, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background are not eligible to participate in this program. Organizations must be willing and able to attest that they do not discriminate on any of these grounds in order to receive donations.
- Microsoft products may not be transferred or resold. Additionally, Microsoft products may not be installed on computers that will be given to or sold to other organizations or individuals.
