The DYMO by Pelouze model PS5DL electronic postal and shipping scale weighs letters, envelopes, and packages up to 5 pounds and calculates U.S. Postal Service First-Class and Priority mailing and shipping prices, including airmail charges to Canada and Mexico. When postal rates change, the new rates can be downloaded via the serial port of a Windows PC with an Internet connection. Although DYMO no longer produces this model, its functions are similar to those of current models.

The scale weighs items in increments of 0.1 ounce. It has a tare feature that allows users to separate the weight of a container from the weight of its contents.

The scale is powered by either a 9-volt battery or an AC adapter, neither of which is included. An AC adapter is not required, but if one is desired, model ADPT2 can be purchased directly from the DYMO website or by calling (877) 289-3966.

Caution

This scale does not take size into account. Since May 2007, Postal Service prices depend on size as well as weight. In most cases, packages weighing less than 5 pounds will not exceed Postal Service size limits for a specific kind of mail, but users should check the Postal Service website carefully when sending a large package.

Computers with Only USB Ports

The scale-to-PC cable supplied with the scale requires a computer to have a standard nine-pin serial port. Computers with only USB ports will require a third-party serial-to-USB adapter. DYMO does not sell these adapters and does not recommend any particular model; however, they have determined that Belkin model F5U109/F5U409 is NOT compatible with the scale.

Current Download Information

The operator's manual that comes with the scale has out-of-date information about downloading current postal rates. Since the manual was issued, Pelouze was acquired by DYMO, and DYMO has released a new software application called DYMO Scale Manager, which simplifies the process of downloading rates. The application and instructions for its use are available at the DYMO support site.

Charges May Apply

Generally, DYMO charges for rate-change downloads whenever the USPS changes its rates. For limited times, DYMO might choose to offer rate-change downloads at no charge.
