This offer gives nonprofit organizations and public libraries access to merchant services and hardware at special rates lower than Dharma Merchant Service's published rates. This TechSoup offer facilitates organizations' access to the discounted rates, but organizations pay Dharma directly for the discounted services and hardware.
Benefits for Organizations
Dharma's services could be helpful to organizations in the following ways:
- Reducing payment processing expenses though Dharma's special rates (organizations processing $2,000 or more per month will pay lower fees with Dharma than with PayPal or Square)
- Allowing organizations to accept payments on their website with more custom options than the basic services offered by third-party payment processors like PayPal, Google Checkout, or Amazon Payments
- Enabling organizations to accept credit cards at one-time events and not pay fees for opening or closing an account
Percentage of Fees Donated Back
Organizations that participate in this offer will receive 10 percent of the gross annual processing profits from their Dharma merchant accounts as an annual donation.
Services Offered
Dharma Merchant Services provides reduced rates for:
- Credit/debit card and check processing services, with card present or not present, including e-commerce transactions

Physical Terminals
Dharma offers both wired and wireless physical terminals for card-present payment processing as well as card-reader attachments for accepting payments through mobile devices. Customers from TechSoup pay reduced rates when they purchase a new or refurbished terminal or rent a terminal for one-time use.
Web-Based Payment Gateway
Dharma offers Authorize.Net payment gateway accounts for accepting credit and debit cards and electronic checks through a website. An organization can use Authorize.Net to add a Donate button to its website or to connect to a shopping cart to simplify web-based donations. An organization can use Authorize.Net for both card-not-present and swiped retail transaction processing. Swiped transactions can be processed with card readers, which connect to a computer and can be purchased from Dharma.
PCI Certification
Credit card companies require any U.S. organization that processes, stores, or transmits credit card data to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). Dharma offers PCI DSS certification through its partnership with Trustwave, a certified Qualified Security Assessor (QSA) and Authorized Scanning Vendor (ASV).
No Contract Required
Dharma does not require a contract to open a merchant account. There are no termination, cancellation, or minimum transaction fees associated with a merchant account. However, organizations must agree to the terms and conditions of the Dharma Merchant Account agreement.
Organizations Switching Payment Processors
Organizations that are currently accepting credit cards should confirm with their current service provider that there will be no cancellation fee. Some cancellation fees can be very large, and it might make sense to wait until the contract runs out.
