How to Check Directly on the OFAC-SDN site
If you only have one or two grantees to list-check…
List-checking will continue to be a requirement of all grant-making entities until the US Government repeals the USA PATRIOT Act. This year Mott only requires checking one list - OFAC-SDN. Because Mott requires only one list, you have a free alternative if you only have one or two grantees.
You can check each organization, organization contact, and project contact manually. Go to the OFAC-SDN site directly and conduct these checks. Do make sure you print the results pages so you have the documentation Mott requires.
Click on the SDN link to download the 250+ page SDN list in Adobe Acrobat (this list is updated periodically, always get the latest list from the SDN site before checking). When the list is open in Acrobat, you can click on the search icon in the tool bar at the top of the page, type in the organization name, and a box on the right will return links to all occurrences of the name. You will need to verify that your organization is not a match with any results you may get, and you can usually do that by comparing addresses.
Repeat the process with the complete name of the organization contact, and again with the project contact. If matches occur with those two names, you can obtain proof that they are not really a match by asking your organization and project contacts for proof of their citizenship and/or birth date (a photocopy of a drivers license or passport will provide this).
Document everything by printing out screen shots (even if there are no matches), keeping document photocopies--drivers license, passport, 501c3 letter or whatever you collect to verify that your grantee is not on this list. Make sure you note the date that you did the check somewhere in the documentation.
You can find details of this required documentation in Mott's Grantee Toolbox. You can access the entire site by using the navigation links on the left navigation bar. Alternatively, you should have received an email from Mott containing login information for the Grantee toolbox; follow those instructions.
