Started in 1999 as a hobbyist project, and still attracting almost 100,000 tests a day now, ShieldsUP! is a website that tests your computer for possible network vulnerabilities. While "port-scanning" has been used and part of the network administrator's toolkit for awhile, ShieldsUP! was the first service that made it easy for users to get a big picture of their network security without complex tools or command line scripting. The site is easy to use yet is informative for the non-techie, and thus remains to be popular long after its inception.

- Very nice, easy to use, not super technical, really breaks it down.
- Cons:
- only scans ports 1 through 1056 and an 64 port ranges you specify thereafter- but hey, it's free so I'll retract this statement!
