Travel Reduction Scary Stats
Back to TeleGreen Your Work: Travel Reduction campaign page
Telecommuting
- US workers commute an average of 10,000 miles per year and consume 67 billion gallons of gas. Original source is "The Green Book," by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas Kostigen
- Employee travel to and from the office accounts for roughly 1/4 of carbon emissions from all office operations, according to the Environmental Defense Fund
- Leaving your car at home two times a week can cut greenhouse gas emissions by 1600 lbs per year, according to the US EPA
- Americans spend more than 100 hours a year commuting to work, which is more than the average two weeks of vacation time (80 hours) taken by many workers during a year. - U.S. Census Bureau
- Recent studies also show that on average, employees are more productive and satisfied when allowed to telecommute at least part-time.
- Citing a case history of a 40 person company that actively promoted telework, a Telework Coalition study found that the organization was able to move to an office with less than half the space (and rent), 57% of teleworking employees reported improved job satisfaction, and 15,000 vehicle trips were eliminated in the first two years of the program.
Auto Pollution
- A car that gets 20 miles to the gallon will emit about 50 tons of carbon dioxide over its lifetime. ITIF Improving Quality of Life Through Telecommuting Report
- 34 million American SUV's emit up to 30% more carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons than normal passenger cars and up to 75% more nitrogen oxide.
- Each gallon of gas that your car burns releases about 22 pounds of atmospheric warming carbon dioxide. Drive 10 fewer miles each week and eliminate about 500 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
- Around the world, there are 806 million cars and light trucks on the road.

- Plane fuel adds 600 million tons of carbon dioxide per year to the environment or 3.5% of the global human total. (467 KB PDF) By taking even one or two less plane trips per year you'll help reduce your emissions significantly.
- Pollution at airports include noise! Noise also may interfere with learning.
- Carbon emissions from airline travel contributes 3.5% of the greenhouse gas emissions from developing countries. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) estimates that aviation emissions are currently 492 million tons per year and growing at a rate of 6% per year.
- One 4150-km (2,578-mile) flight emits 762 lbs of CO2 per person. - Carbon Footprint Calculator
